VIDEO SUBMITTED BY NORM TREMBLAY, MM3 – 1966-69
Flying an RF-8G, VFP-62 Lt. Norman Green was on a mission on 6 September 1966, near the end of the FDR’s combat deployment. He was was flying a final photo pass over Haiphong harbor in North Vietnam when the aircraft was hit by a 37mm shell which badly damaged the port outer wing and aileron. Very fortunately the pilot was able to escape safely and make a straight in landing aboard the carrier. The damaged aircraft is shown in hanger bay #2. It is a testament to the ruggedness of the RF-8 Crusader and skill of the pilot.
