HAVE YOU CHECKED THE HOME PAGE FOR THE LATEST INFO?

I have managed to resurrect some of the Guest Books from the previous FDR Websites. There are some that are lost forever but this is the best there is at the moment. There is a lot of good stuff there.

Click on the year you want to view. Click on the left arrow at the top of your browser to return to this page.

SO

Please put your email address in your message so your shipmates can get back to you (if they can remember you).

There is software on board that makes it unreadable to the “bots” who collect that sort of stuff.

All entries must be approved before they will appear in the book. Any inappropriate entries, as well as those with invalid email addresses, will be deleted and will not appear. I check daily so don’t despair if your entry doesn’t appear immediately.

Due to a rash of automated spam messages we now use “captcha” authentication.  Just enter the “captcha” code and then SUBMIT. Don’t worry about upper or lower case….either will work. If you have trouble reading it just click the little button to the right and it will “refresh”. Thanks!

Many shipmates have told me, via email, about having visited this site. Oddly many have not left entries here for their shipmates to see. THEY do wonder how you are and probably would love to hear from you. This is a great way get back in contact.

REMEMBER….THE ONLY  WAY FOR YOUR SHIPMATES TO GET IN CONTACT WITH YOU IS HAVING YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS IN YOUR MESSAGE

For YOUR protection – No home phone numbers or addresses please. Please save that for when you make email contact.

REMEMBER….IF YOU WANT TO BE CONTACTED MAKE SURE YOU PUT YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS IN THE BODY OF YOUR MESSAGE

  1. Was with VFP-62 Det 8/67 to 5/68 in the Med. Was the first & only time aboard any ship during my enlistment. Had the greatest cruise with some of the finest people in the world.Shipboard life was such a different thing. Everything from the showers, the planes going off the cats. Love to hear from anyone there on that cruise.

  2. Frank Turchi AVCM ret.

Made workups and Med cruise (1964) with the FDR when attached to HU-2.
At the time I was an ATCA (acting like a Chief) and the Det CPO.
Would have been a great cruise if we hadn’t lost one of the Tankers.
Enjoyed the ports especially Palermo where I had the pleasure of spending
the time in port with a lot of my cousins and a great Aunt, my father was
born in Palermo, Sicily so it was like “Homecoming”.
Loved that old rust bucket. Another bad part of the cruise going back to
Bayonne for new screws and then going back to the Med for another month
or two. GO NAVY…long sail the Rosy wherever she is.
    Frank

  3. MY FIRST CRUISE, THE LAST ONE FOR THE FDR. 76-77. I WAS IN VA-215 OUT OF LEMOORE,CA. WAS TAD THE WHOLE CRUISE TO SRS. HAD A GOOD TIME AND MADE A LOT OF FRIENDS. FUNNY WHEN WE WENT TO SICILY, THE CO TOLD US WE COULDNT RENT CARS AND DRIVE THERE. THE CO THEN WRECKED IN A CAR. THE XO MADE HIM STAY ON THE SHIP. FUNNY TOO IS ALL THE MANOVERBOARD DRILLS IN THE DAY. SOME GUYS MADE UP A DUMMY AND THREW IT OVER AT NIGHT JUST SO THE NIGHT SLEEPERS WOULD SEE HOW IT FELT. ENOUGH SAID ON THAT. HA. SEEN TO MUCH OF NAPLES. BUT WE HAD A WRECK AND HAD TO GET THE HOLE FIXED IN THE BOW. OH GOOD TIMES. RETIRED IN 1994 AS AN AME-1, AND LIVING IN ARKANSAS. goldpan57@yahoo.com

I was a storekeeper with VF-84 1969-1970. Did Med cruise workups on the FDR. I remembered the “Jolly Rogers” Fighting Eighty Four, we had F-4Js. Some of my hardest work days in the Navy during this period. Re-enlisted for orders to another squadron. Went on to do 30 years. Retired as a E-9. Anyone out there remember me? alfoster964@yahoo.com

  16. I served with VA-12 from 1961-63. We deployed on the FDR many times, most memorably for a 62-63 Med cruise interrupted by the Cuban missile crisis. We left Naples early and sailed up the Bosphorus straits where our planes were ready to attack inside Russia. It was quite an experience.

I was also a member of the Seafarers 42 glee club. We had an amazing time singing all over the Mediterranean.

If there is anyone who shared those experiences in VA-12 or with the Seafarers, I’d love to hear from you. My email is ehrhardt_d@bellsouth.net.

  17. I served on USS FDR with VC-33 in Feb. 1950
We went to Gitmo and returned to Norfolk NAS
I want to know dates and details of the cruise.
    Thanks,
    George Watson

  18. Served as an AT3 with VA-175. Made a Carib Cruise to Cuba and Haiti in Summer of 1952 and in the Fall of 1952 made a Med Cruise aboard the FDR. Anybody from the old squadron still around? Enjoyed reading the guest book but didn’t see any names or dates that would fit. A great ship with great memories.
