HAVE YOU CHECKED THE HOME PAGE FOR THE LATEST INFO?

I have managed to resurrect some of the Guest Books from the previous FDR Websites. There are some that are lost forever but this is the best there is at the moment. There is a lot of good stuff there.

Click on the year you want to view. Click on the left arrow at the top of your browser to return to this page.

SO

Please put your email address in your message so your shipmates can get back to you (if they can remember you).

There is software on board that makes it unreadable to the “bots” who collect that sort of stuff.

All entries must be approved before they will appear in the book. Any inappropriate entries, as well as those with invalid email addresses, will be deleted and will not appear. I check daily so don’t despair if your entry doesn’t appear immediately.

Due to a rash of automated spam messages we now use “captcha” authentication.  Just enter the “captcha” code and then SUBMIT. Don’t worry about upper or lower case….either will work. If you have trouble reading it just click the little button to the right and it will “refresh”. Thanks!

Many shipmates have told me, via email, about having visited this site. Oddly many have not left entries here for their shipmates to see. THEY do wonder how you are and probably would love to hear from you. This is a great way get back in contact.

REMEMBER….THE ONLY  WAY FOR YOUR SHIPMATES TO GET IN CONTACT WITH YOU IS HAVING YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS IN YOUR MESSAGE

For YOUR protection – No home phone numbers or addresses please. Please save that for when you make email contact.

REMEMBER….IF YOU WANT TO BE CONTACTED MAKE SURE YOU PUT YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS IN THE BODY OF YOUR MESSAGE

  1. I barely made it as a Crew member on board the USS Franklin D Roosevelt <CV 42). I reported on board just after Christmas, 1976 while the ship was at anchor Catania, Sicily. I reported to Communications Department, CR Division, as an RMSA (at that time, designated Strikers went straight to their divisions, without having to go Mess Cranking first). Port Call in Naples, Italy shortly after the 1977 New Year, I was able visit my older brother, who was an ET on board the USS Nimitz. What a difference from on of the oldest fleet carriers to the newest. i informed my brother, if the Decommissioning of FDR was a go, would he be ok if I requested “Brother Duty.” Getting underway, again, on 09 January, 1977, I experienced my first AT Sea Collision in the Striats of Macina. The collision really hosed up the Hurricane bow on FDR, which ensured decommissioning of ther ship. FDR returned to Charlie Pier, Naval Station Mayport from her "Final Med Cruise.” FDR Changed / Swapped Home Ports with the USS Forrestal in the middle of June 1977, at NOB Norfolk, and then Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, VA. Requesting brother duty earlier, the detailer cut me a set of orders to the USS Nimitz, which I transferred to on 05 July 1977. A very short, however, eventful tour of duty to say the least. One thing the FDR did for me…. when my LCPO on board NMTZ ask me if I’d “Mess Cranked,” of course I said, "Hell yeah, on board FDR!” I managed to dodge that Mess Crank billet up until 1986, when I got stuck with Mess Deck Master-At-Arms on my 3rd Ship, a Rescue & Salvage Aux Ship.

  2. I arrived in OI division about a month before her final deployment and stayed till she was decommissioned at Portsmouth the following year. Met a lot of great people aboard that I am proud to refer as shipmates.

  3. I am looking for anybody who would have known my dad Douglas DeRose. He was enlisted 1973 to 1975. I know he worked in maintenance and in the boiler room. He talked about the big storm and the Yon Kipper war. Anyone who remembers him can contact me joscie.kilburn@yahoo.com. He passed away in 2017 after a long fight with kidney failure and neuropathy.

  4. Hi. I’m looking for anyone who knew or remembers my Dad, Frank Crowell. He was in the Fighter Squadron 171 and was on the 1957-58 Med cruise. He also was around during the bad accident before the cruise.
    (He died several years ago.)
I recently received information about his service. I know the Navy impacted him, but he rarely talked about it.
    My first name’s Rita, birdluv@rocketmail.com.
    Thanks.
And thanks for your service. It must’ve been scary times doing the Cold War drills.
