I have managed to resurrect some of the Guest Books from the previous FDR Websites. There are some that are lost forever but this is the best there is at the moment. There is a lot of good stuff there.

There is software on board that makes it unreadable to the “bots” who collect that sort of stuff.
All entries must be approved before they will appear in the book. Any inappropriate entries, as well as those with invalid email addresses, will be deleted and will not appear. I check daily so don’t despair if your entry doesn’t appear immediately.
Due to a rash of automated spam messages we now use “captcha” authentication. Just enter the “captcha” code and then SUBMIT. Don’t worry about upper or lower case….either will work. If you have trouble reading it just click the little button to the right and it will “refresh”. Thanks!
Many shipmates have told me, via email, about having visited this site. Oddly many have not left entries here for their shipmates to see. THEY do wonder how you are and probably would love to hear from you. This is a great way get back in contact.

I was in VF-14 (Demons),the ship was in the Med when I joined the squadron. Flew aboard from Naples on the COD (first arrested landing). This would have been in 1958. We were at sea for 2 weeks when we had a catapalt failure and returned back to Naples for repairs. I enjoyed visiting all the countries around the Med. Email: w4qdn@aol.com

I served aboard the FDR 1960-61 in CR Div.Was there in plenty of time to enjoy playing with Hurricane Donna, then Brooklyn shipyard and then the Med. Left to go to pre-commissioning school in Norfolk, VA then to the USS Kennebec AO-36 in Brooklyn, NY. Jan of 1961 we took this relic through the Panama to San Francisco. I was promoted to RM2 while in Norfolk. After a total 7 1/2 years active and reserves, I transferred to the Army for flight school and continued active duty for 6 more years then was caught by reduction in services in 73 but stayed in reserves for a total of 35 years. I was aboard the FDR for the 1956/7 cruise. We left Norfolk just before Christmas for the shakedown and it was a real shakedown. I was the division leader of the only flt that morning that took off and I had to wait for the other three to get on. The first two A/C were put on elev. and the last one before me was taxied forward of the net and chained down right on the deck. When I landed, the A/C was chained down right where it stopped. These were LOG chains. We had walls of water coming over the deck that night that were so great, green water got in the crows nest. Both of the A/C that were chained down, were not longer with us. Just the log chain and the parts they were fastened to were still on the deck. The tin can lost ALL of its antennas. It caved in the stbd bow of the carrier and flooded about 12 wardrooms. We returned to Norfolk early. I wonder why????

I made a Med Cruise in 1964 assigned to 4th Div made AZ3 and received orders to HS7 Norfolk Va in Dec 64. Email: russelleugene@att.net
Although I don’t appear on the roster, I joined the Rosie late in her last Med cruise at Genoa in 1977 a year prior to my discharge, after three long years at NAVCOMMSTA Balboa. It was only a short time at sea, culminating with the decommissioning. I remember reading a lot during that time, and meeting some interesting characters.
2 persons I have never been able to find. MM2 Silas Stoddard said he was from Montana, last contact summer 71 Naples where he was an attache.
Other person MMC Elmer West from Tennessee, could not ask for a better chief than him. Always stood up for his men and took no shit from anybody. Went on several liberty ports of call visiting local sites.

My father was Ens/LtJG Thomas E. Campbell, a Helldiver pilot in VT75, and a plankholder on the FDR. I have records and photos of his postwar service, beginning with his Shellback certificate from the shakedown cruise to Brazil through the first cruise of the Mediterranean. What I don’t have and am very interested in is the early history of the ship up to and including the maiden voyage in November ’45. I’m also hopeful there is some way to replace his plankholder certificate which has disintegrated due to age and poor storage. If anyone has relevant info, please respond to campbellkd14@hotmail.com. I had been working in C-530 that same. I was in the hole with seven of the crew that were killed. I had been order out of C-530 about five min, before she blew. God bless the Crew.
