There is software on board that makes it unreadable to the “bots” who collect that sort of stuff.
All entries must be approved before they will appear in the book. Any inappropriate entries, as well as those with invalid email addresses, will be deleted and will not appear. I check daily so don’t despair if your entry doesn’t appear immediately.
Due to a rash of automated spam messages we now use “captcha” authentication. Just enter the “captcha” code and then SUBMIT. Don’t worry about upper or lower case….either will work. If you have trouble reading it just click the little button to the right and it will “refresh”. Thanks!
Many shipmates have told me, via email, about having visited this site. Oddly many have not left entries here for their shipmates to see. THEY do wonder how you are and probably would love to hear from you. This is a great way get back in contact.

Hi Dan Reed, I was in VA87 in ’72 cruise and while I was there met a couple AT gents from the fighter squadrons. Do you remember an AT named James Levy? Don’t recall which squadron 41 or 84. He was like a lot of enlisted air dales had 1,2,3 yrs of college prior to enlisting. If I recall he went to Vanderbilt. Thanks.
I was in VF-11 from 1959 until 1962 and made two med crouse on the FDR. On the last one they left us at Rota Spain and picked us up on there way back to the states.

Don Appel: here’s a one ups man ship. During the 57/58 Med Cruise. We left Barcelona , Spain (on or about 11 Aug 57) Enroute Cannes, France. Well something happened. Everynight over the PA we were told “We’re steaming East ( for a month)” We pulled int Athens , Greece. 12 Sept 1957. Never found out WHAT HAPPENED????

Next question: everything I see or read about one of the reasons for de-comm of the Rosie was weak engines. During my time I never experienced anything bad about our main engines, in fact I got chastised for being a 20 year old and doing a full power run. To me that meant lets see what this thing will do! We were turning over 33 knots with plenty of steam, no cheating before I got caught and was told to get back down where it belonged. The USN ‘s idea of full power run was get to classified speed of 32 knots and hold for 8 hours.
Hello. I am the historian for Hicksville, Long Island, NY. I am trying to find out information about Lt. Albert Joseph Cullen….a fighter pilot who was killed in a mid air collision while serving aboard the FDR. The incident happened on Oct 6, 1951 while the Carrier was in the Mediterranean.

Served aboard her from 69 to 72 B division miss all the friends and shipmates
I was on board 1968 through 1969. On our shake down cruise after dry docks I was knocked overboard refueling around the Virgin Islands
Just wondered if anyone remembers the event?
I was with the Marine Detachment on board the USS FDR CV42 from Dec 1968 to the end of July1969.When I boarded the ship in Dec 68 it was in dry dock at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
All us Marines were sent on a 10 day leave because our berthing compartment wasn’t ready.
I have many fond memories from being on board and learned a lot.
I had many friends Marines and Sailors alike.I got to go and visit places that I wouldn’t have seen otherwise.
I would like to hear from some of my shipmates if they remember me.

I was aboard the Rosie in ’52 – ’54. I was a DC striker in “R” Div. I remember a couple of names – Bill Guy, Slovic. Been a long time!

As GMT2 Clyde Armstead posted on Jan. 11, 2016, I was on the Rosie during the dry dock at Philly in 1974; some how they hooked up the Delaware River water to the ship drinking water. We all got shots to ward off disease but their were some sick sailors. I haven’t seen anything on the web about the reason we went to dry dock. We were slammed with a massive storm returning from the Med in the spring of 74. Rosie took some major damage, we had green water coming in over the flight deck; one of the hangar doors got pushed in and fell on a plane that was tied down. I believe we had a fatality that night; one of the air crew chiefs was injured when he was checking the tie downs. It would be good to hear from anyone who remembers those few days.
