HAVE YOU CHECKED THE HOME PAGE FOR THE LATEST INFO?

I have managed to resurrect some of the Guest Books from the previous FDR Websites. There are some that are lost forever but this is the best there is at the moment. There is a lot of good stuff there.

SO

Please put your email address in your message so your shipmates can get back to you (if they can remember you).

There is software on board that makes it unreadable to the “bots” who collect that sort of stuff.

All entries must be approved before they will appear in the book. Any inappropriate entries, as well as those with invalid email addresses, will be deleted and will not appear. I check daily so don’t despair if your entry doesn’t appear immediately.

Due to a rash of automated spam messages we now use “captcha” authentication.  Just enter the “captcha” code and then SUBMIT. Don’t worry about upper or lower case….either will work. If you have trouble reading it just click the little button to the right and it will “refresh”. Thanks!

Many shipmates have told me, via email, about having visited this site. Oddly many have not left entries here for their shipmates to see. THEY do wonder how you are and probably would love to hear from you. This is a great way get back in contact.

REMEMBER….THE ONLY  WAY FOR YOUR SHIPMATES TO GET IN CONTACT WITH YOU IS HAVING YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS IN YOUR MESSAGE

For YOUR protection – No home phone numbers or addresses please. Please save that for when you make email contact.

REMEMBER….IF YOU WANT TO BE CONTACTED MAKE SURE YOU PUT YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS IN THE BODY OF YOUR MESSAGE

  1. served on rosie from oct 1974 to june 1977 in 3rd div. would love to hear from some of my old div buddies

  2. My dad { Norman b. Healey} was on the FDR in 1946 and 47. I remember all the stories he used to tell me about being aboard her. I know he always thought of that ship with the fondest of memories. The stories will always be a major part of my memories of my father. I hope anybody out there that remembers my dad please e-mail me. It will bring my dad a bit closer to me. I miss him terribly, he passed in 2010, and I always search for the things that he really loved. davidhealey17@yahoo.com

    Your FDR bud, Nick.

  4. Kristan Walden "E" Div. 67-70

Served in Lighting and Electrical Shop. Ran the Battery Locker/Small Craft Electrical Shop. Served in the Aviation and Ordinance Electrical Shop, in charge of all elevators and dumb waiters. T.A.D. Permanent Shore Patrol (Mayport Beach), Petty Officer in Charge of Mess Decks. Played on the ships Basketball Team and the Baseball Team. Although we may have thought different at the time, we loved the Rosie and worked and played hard.

  5. Stephen R Biegler

Severed 1973 1977 Airman injured while out on the Med had right hand crushed by phantom 14 would love to hear from anyone serving during this time

  6. Gordon J Thumudo, Fox Div, 60-63

I hated being in but before I got to the bottom of the Gang.Plank, wished I’d have shipped over.

  7. Frank Nelson AT2 VAW-121 tad IMA-w/c 640

Was aboard for the next to last cruise in 1975. TAD to IMA w/c 640 ECM/Radar shop.

  8. Garry Hundley AQ3/AIMD

Inboard for 1970-1973 in va176. Was on board when in the bay of Biscayne they announced flooding from the flight.

  9. Richard James Ford

Proudly served aboard the USS Franklin Delano Roosevelt CVA42 from 1965 to 1969 as an electronic technician. Honorably discharged as 3rd Class Petty Officer in 1969.

  10. Reported aboard in November 1968 and transferred off in December 1969. The ship was in drydock at the time in Portsmouth. I was assigned to the deck department, first division. I was immediately sent mess cooking at Callahan Center. Once they brought the galley back on board I was still mess cooking in dry stores/breakout/reefer. Came back to first division, and immediately started side cleaning. Not sure how many times I painted that ship. I remember GTMO and spending Labor Day weekend at St. Thomas. While in GTMO this other guy and I jumped from the flight deck on a dare. Transferred out to go to data processing school, and ended up being stationed in London England attached to CINCUSNAVEUR in operational reporting. Kept track of FDR while she was on Med cruises. Still think fondly back to those days as an 18-year-old aboard ship.

  11. Reported aboard the Rosie in Nov. 76 to join VF-111. I was a young kid on his first deployment and had no idea what was going on. I remember how she reeked of jet fuel, but I didn’t know the hazards we faced. I am glad to see others remember the contaminated fresh water and hope other shipmates can provide collaboration of this. I got progressively sicker on that ship and spent my last month of the cruise in sick bay. I was suffering from what I now know to be jet fuel overexposure.

For the last 20-years I have gotten progressively sicker. I am suffering from the long term damage done to me during that period. If you suffer from neurological disorders (including brain damage), seizures, heart diseases and multiple chemical sensitivity you need to inform your doctors of your time on this deployment. Aviation types are really susceptible to later-life illness.

I would really like to hear from others–perhaps we can provide enough collaborative evidence to provide the VA with evidence to help those of us affected. It takes massive amounts of medication for me to remain alert and organize, but you can email me at charlesreeps@yahoo.com with your story.

  12. My father Luther (James ) Giles may have been aboard the rosie in the early 50s he helped put out a fire that earned him the naval destinguished service award,he died two years ago ! I am very proud of him,he was successful and respected by every body who knew him !

Would love to hear from anyone who served on Rosie from 1973-1975 in 2nd Deck Division.

  14. David Engelhardt (Seaman) 4th div. 63-65

So far I found one shipmate from my div. his name is Brian Lundy, he did not leave a E-Mail address. There is a couple of other names that stands out even though I didn’t know them personally. One was a BT3 name Black, he was consider one bad ass, even the Marines respected him. The other was a BM1 named Atwell who was rumored to have the biggest slush fund in the Navy. If you remember any of these guys give me a shout.

  15. David Engelhardt (Seaman) 4th div. 63-65

I was transferred from the Saratoga in early 63 after returning to Mayport Fl. from the Cuban blockade. The FDR was just returning from a Med Cruise and some of the guys in 4th division there wanted to go back. I was in the 4th div on the Sara and was not looking forward to a winter cruise, so I switched. Even though the Sara was newer I liked the FDR much better. The guys in the 4th were a great bunch. I was on board during our time in the shipyards to replace a propeller, we ended up with a complete overhaul. I did the 64 Med Cruise, shortly after our return I and some others from 3rd & 4th div. was involved in a bad auto accident, I was discharge from the hospital in Jacksonville in July of 65. If anyone remembers me from that time contact me at dav572000@yahoo.com. I’m looking forward to hearing from you.
