HAVE YOU CHECKED THE HOME PAGE FOR THE LATEST INFO?

    I have managed to resurrect some of the Guest Books from the previous FDR Websites. There are some that are lost forever but this is the best there is at the moment. There is a lot of good stuff there.

SO

Please put your email address in your message so your shipmates can get back to you (if they can remember you).

 There is software on board that makes it unreadable to the “bots” who collect that sort of stuff.

All entries must be approved before they will appear in the book. Any inappropriate entries, as well as those with invalid email addresses, will be deleted and will not appear. I check daily so don’t despair if your entry doesn’t appear immediately.

Due to a rash of automated spam messages we now use “captcha” authentication.  Just enter the “captcha” code and then SUBMIT. Don’t worry about upper or lower case….either will work. If you have trouble reading it just click the little button to the right and it will “refresh”. Thanks!

Many shipmates have told me, via email, about having visited this site. Oddly many have not left entries here for their shipmates to see. THEY do wonder how you are and probably would love to hear from you. This is a great way get back in contact.

REMEMBER….THE ONLY  WAY FOR YOUR SHIPMATES TO GET IN CONTACT WITH YOU IS HAVING YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS IN YOUR MESSAGE

For YOUR protection – No home phone numbers or addresses please. Please save that for when you make email contact.

REMEMBER….IF YOU WANT TO BE CONTACTED MAKE SURE YOU PUT YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS IN THE BODY OF YOUR MESSAGE

  3. I was a crewmember on VAH ll heavy A3D 2 on 7 May 1962 when our airccraft collided with the “round down” on the aft. We lost tail bumper,tail hook and all hydraulics. Went around several times around 10:30 pm and finally diverted to Suda Bay, Crete. We ran out of fuel about 15 miles short of field and all three of us bailed out successfully. Anyone remember that suspensful night?

  12. Linda Morey Suydam, I was on board the Rosie when she was recommissioned in 1956 until we came back from the Med cruise in 1959. While I did not know your father I do remember an accident where a pilot and 2 other crew members were killed when the plane they were in went overboard. Sorry but I don’t remember the names of those killed. I am pretty sure it was in 1957. My E Mail address is king7373@sbcglobal.net if you want to discuss the incident I remember.

    was in dry dock.we lived in mayport,florida,the ship was docked
    there.my dad talked about the time when the prop or screw fell off of
    the ship.he also has film on a 8mm reel,the time when they were
    crossing the equator and were doing the initiation,where the sailors
    were crawling through the troughs and rubbing their faces in the
    bellies of some men who were dressed as king and queen.

  15. TERRY KRYWAY, If you ever read this message please contact the webmaster of this website.

  16. Jim, Most of the dates you are seeking are available right here on the website on the OPHIST page.

  17. I was onboard the USS Roosevelt during the early cruise, Jan 1970 to July 1970. I was an ADJ-2 T/S (trouble shooter) with Attack Squadron 215 flying Corsair II A-7B aircraft.
    Our last cruise, a WESTPAC, CAG 9 (Jan 69-July 69) was onboard the USS Enterprise CVAN-65, the cruise she caught on fire. As a trouble shooter, final checking our birds prior to the 8:30 sortie, I was in the epicenter of the entire conflagration from start to finish… I don’t know to this day how I made it out alive….. but here I am, asking questions from you.

    Today. I’m writing a book about Da Boyz of 63. It’s about 24 vets that graduated from a small town in NE California in 1963. That class had 33 girls, 35 boys and of those 35 boys, 24 joined the service during those tumultuous times in the 60’s. It is my goal to document them and their bios.
    In my section, and this is where you come in, I’m trying to document with dates the ports of call we made during that cruise.
    Here’s my best shot: If you have any answers, you can email me at: coachconn@hotmail.com
    * Rota, Spain. …. early Jan 1970
    * Staits of Gilbraltar…. early Jan 1970
    * Barcelona, Spain… .maybe after we passed through the straits?….. late Jan?
    * Cannes, France…. right after the Canne’s Film festival, which would have been May 2-16, 1970. It seems to me we pulled in about a week after the festival… that would have put us in there about the 23rd of May
    * Palma de Mallorca….. it seems we sat anchored in a bay, the EM stayed aboard; the officers pulled liberty via the captain’s yacht. Date ???
    * Valleta, Malta . .. ………. 9 Feb 1970. I have a flyer about site to see and visit and the date is on the flyer. I watched a bull fight here (probably not as it is more Italian than Spanish) or Mallorca (but we were kept aboard as EM) or Barcelona (probably, as the Spanish were rabid about their bull fights during that time period…. running out of vogue today… animal rights and all that)
    * In March, four of us trouble shooters were TAD to the USS Forrestal CVA-59. We had a hand full of pilots needing flight time and landing in order to qualify for, probably flight deck pay?
    We were transported to a destroyer via a bosen’s chair and from the destroyer to the Forrestal via a chopper.
    The Forrestal, like the Roosevelt, was not prepared for A-7B aircraft. Our launch bar system was new to them and it was hectic at times. Maybe the shoes were different our birds…. can’t recall.
    While on the Forrestal, one of our birds diverted to NAS Sigonella; NATO Sigonella, Sicily and in the rain, slid off the end of the runway, blowing a mainmount. We left the Forrestal with a cat shot in the COD (carrier onboard delivery), a C2-A Greyhound. After repairing the mainmount, we tried for three days to catch an Airforce bird, C-130 Hercules heading for Thessaloniki, Greece, where the Roosevelt was tied up.
    * We were in Crete
    * We were in Athens
    * We pulled stateside about July 1, 1970???
    * We pulled into Norfolk, Virginia????
    Jim at
    Also we slipped through the straits of Messina. The gave an all call to report to the flight deck if you wanted to see Italy and Siclly at the same time !!
    Any help you can give, I would appreciate!! Thanks in advance !!
