HAVE YOU CHECKED THE HOME PAGE FOR THE LATEST INFO?

I have managed to resurrect some of the Guest Books from the previous FDR Websites. There are some that are lost forever but this is the best there is at the moment. There is a lot of good stuff there.

SO

Please put your email address in your message so your shipmates can get back to you (if they can remember you).

There is software on board that makes it unreadable to the “bots” who collect that sort of stuff.

All entries must be approved before they will appear in the book. Any inappropriate entries, as well as those with invalid email addresses, will be deleted and will not appear. I check daily so don’t despair if your entry doesn’t appear immediately.

Due to a rash of automated spam messages we now use “captcha” authentication.  Just enter the “captcha” code and then SUBMIT. Don’t worry about upper or lower case….either will work. If you have trouble reading it just click the little button to the right and it will “refresh”. Thanks!

Many shipmates have told me, via email, about having visited this site. Oddly many have not left entries here for their shipmates to see. THEY do wonder how you are and probably would love to hear from you. This is a great way get back in contact.

REMEMBER….THE ONLY  WAY FOR YOUR SHIPMATES TO GET IN CONTACT WITH YOU IS HAVING YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS IN YOUR MESSAGE

For YOUR protection – No home phone numbers or addresses please. Please save that for when you make email contact.

REMEMBER….IF YOU WANT TO BE CONTACTED MAKE SURE YOU PUT YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS IN THE BODY OF YOUR MESSAGE

Served on Rosie from March 1964 to March 1966. Two great med cruises .Great times!!!Marine Detachment

  2. I am wondering if anyone remembers my grandfather. His name was Frank Morey. He was a member of VAH-3 (sea dragons). He died in a midnight crash of an A3 on 08/19/1957 in the Med. I would LOVE to hear from anyone that may remember him and can share any insight on him. Thank you all for your service and sacrifice!

  3. Edward J. Zemaitis

I witnessed the fatal crash of the AJ1 Savage off the deck of the USS
Franklin D. Roosevelt CVB 42 in 1950. I was stationed on the sponson
deck on the port side, just forward of the deck edge elevator.

  4. I’m trying to locate someone who knew my uncle on the FDR. He was a Chief Petty Officer but I don’t see his name on the crew roster anywhere. His name was Raymon (Ray) Veasaw. I think he actually retired mid 70’s. I do know that he was on the ship for sure in the early mid 60’s. He too was cruising the mediteranean.

    My email address is joyce_golos@Hotmail.com

  5. Only did one cruise on her in 1975. Attached to VF-84 Jolly Rogers. AQ2 worked the flight deck during flight ops. Green shirt. Remember it well. Mostly the flight deck fire. Scared the crap out of me.

  6. Served aboard the Roosevelt from September 1958 to January 1961.

Assigned to: “A” Division, worked in the LOX crew.

  7. Served on the FDR Fall 1961 thru June 1963. Trying to locate Ray Goodner, Emil Jabour, Charlie Seay and other OA Division shipmates.

  8. Remember the good days aboard the FDR. Was on the Med cruise 1961. Great cruise and great shipmates. Looking forward to getting the full CD of the cruise.

Lot of years later with 22 grandchildren and a grandson in the USN.

Would love to hear from some of my shipmates.

  9. does anyone remember the unexpected hurricane in the north atlantic when we were crossing back home to mayport in 1973 or 74? we ended up in dry dock in Philly for repairs as the bow of the ship was actually damaged by 70 – 80 foot waves………

  10. great captain, great crew. captain moran was fantastic. commander mckay, my boss in the ops department was an example for an 18 year old that in ’72 – ’75 had no clue about anything! 40 years later i am still effected by his professionalism. warrant officer sciutto, officers gregg and woodard, jim bock. i often wonder if these guys knew the influence they had on us young guys. they were the best.

  11. boarder ol rosie-boat in december 72……. fresh out of orlando basic. was fortunate enough to sail with capt james moran, a great leader and fantastic captain. worked for commander mckay, ops officer. he probably never knew it, but to this day, 40 years later, commander mckay was an inspiration, and flat-out example for an 18 year old kid that paid attention to his every move, word and kindness. cva-42, and those 3 years, were the most important of my life! great shipmates, med cruises, and hard work. perfect.

  12. I served on the last Med-Cruise onboard The Roosevelt and I was in X-Division. Is there anyone out there who was in X-Division during that time still around? Please respond.

I cannot tell you how thankful I am to have found this website. Tonight, I saw the actual film footage of my uncle’s death when his aircraft crashed into the sea on its takeoff run from the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt aircraft in October of 1950. He was the Third Crewman, Edward R. Barrett, Squadron VC-5 (Aircraft AJ1-Savage). I never met my “Uncle Eddie”, having been born myself in 1962. He was the only and most beloved brother of my father, Raymond P. Barrett. My father forever mourned his brothers untimely death and called out his name on his own deathbed in 1992. I wish that,as terrible as it is, that my dad could have seen exactly what happened and been able to put it to rest. I am so greatful to have stumbled across this website and can now document my findings to Edwards family.

  17. I was an AD3 with the VF-111 Subdowners 1976-77 Rosies CV-42 LAST MED CRUISE. Best time ever!
