HAVE YOU CHECKED THE HOME PAGE FOR THE LATEST INFO?

I have managed to resurrect some of the Guest Books from the previous FDR Websites. There are some that are lost forever but this is the best there is at the moment. There is a lot of good stuff there.

Click on the year you want to view. Click on the left arrow at the top of your browser to return to this page.

SO

Please put your email address in your message so your shipmates can get back to you (if they can remember you).

There is software on board that makes it unreadable to the “bots” who collect that sort of stuff.

All entries must be approved before they will appear in the book. Any inappropriate entries, as well as those with invalid email addresses, will be deleted and will not appear. I check daily so don’t despair if your entry doesn’t appear immediately.

Due to a rash of automated spam messages we now use “captcha” authentication.  Just enter the “captcha” code and then SUBMIT. Don’t worry about upper or lower case….either will work. If you have trouble reading it just click the little button to the right and it will “refresh”. Thanks!

Many shipmates have told me, via email, about having visited this site. Oddly many have not left entries here for their shipmates to see. THEY do wonder how you are and probably would love to hear from you. This is a great way get back in contact.

REMEMBER….THE ONLY  WAY FOR YOUR SHIPMATES TO GET IN CONTACT WITH YOU IS HAVING YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS IN YOUR MESSAGE

For YOUR protection – No home phone numbers or addresses please. Please save that for when you make email contact.

  1. Ahoy all shipmates!
Served aboard the Roosevelt 1967-68. Aviation boatswain’s mate striker (ABH) with VF-32, flightdeck. Wish I had more heart and less mouth at that age.
Found a raggedy model of the Rosie in a shop years ago and still have it. Looking for more stuff. I have studied much about the paranormal sightings involving our ship over the years. anyone else?

    I miss her.

    Message:
I just wanted to let you know that RMCM James Moriarty Passed away on
March 17, 2012, I was stationed with him on the USS Schofield DEG-3 in
1966 and was trying to locate him, I saw that he served onboard FDR so
I thought that you would like to know. TKS RMC J. Walling

  3. Vincent E. Gahren

I’m the son of Vincent E. Gahren who served on the FDR did at least one Med cruise. Any of his shipmates who knew him during his tour or was in the same crew/Division (V-2 Divn; ’56-’57) and can share some insight to the duties they performed aboard ship (especially regarding the firefighting incident) would be appreciated. Thanks men!

  4. Gerald D Joiner

Just a quick post – my Uncle Benjamin H. Pitts, Sr. served aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt 1956-1957. He passed away on March 30, 2012 at his residence in Thomaston, GA – the very same house and very same bedroom where he was born…Thought his shipmates would like to be made aware of his passing. A very wise, very religious and very much loved man, with a most wonderful sense of humor….RIP Uncle Hilman…..

  5. Jerome Peitzman

I have seen some requests about the status of my father Jerry “Pete” Peitzman. He served aboard Rosie in 1954. He told me many things about his Med cruise when I was a boy. He passed away in 2006. He had many fond memories of his time aboard and we used to watch Victory at Sea together on TV. He was sure that I would follow in his footsteps and become a Sailor. He was a little disappointed when I was commissioned in the US Army but he got over it when I became a pilot. He was a good man and I miss him.

  6. Recieved sad news today. Bob Tomaselli who was on the FDR 66-69 in the Deck Dept. and later Catholic Chaplain’s Asst. 68-69. Passed away March 30 2012. May he rest in peace.

  7. Okay cheapskates…join the FDR Reunion group, at ONLY $10 a year it’s a great investment. I just recently signed up and received bumper stickers, window decal, business cards, membership card and I just received their latest news letter/magazine. It is well worth the less than a dollar a month for the yearly membership, because obviously somebody (or a few somebodies) put a lot of effort in to it. And by the way, this is NOT a paid advertisement for it 🙂

On the Rosie between 1961 – 1962, remember the slogan, ‘Join the Navy and see the World’. Yes, only one Med Cruise, did as many tours in each port as possible. Great experience, and still continue to keep in touch with former shipmates, S3 Div. Just heard from Peter Kneller, who has been looking for me for 50 years.

  9. Served on board “Rosie” from 1969-1970 as yeoman for battery division under CWO 4 James Shuffler. Will never forget all the great times had on the Med cruise and my friends..some of the best times of my life..miss u “ROSIE”..thanks for the memories.

  10. Donald F. Schulze

Memories of the last cruise, by a former VF-111 Sundowner…
New Years with Pete Valko, Hotel Napoli,
30 day in port at Naples thanks to collision with that Liberian ship…
then taking a week and going to Munich via train,
Jet breaking the sound barrier and shaking the paint off the walls,
and all of squadron mates (officers and enlisted alike)

I am trying to locate information on my Step-father, ARTHUR WILLIAM SEYMOUR, who served as a welder on the USS Roosevelt some time between 1945 and 1959. He passed away at age 81 in 2010 and among his belongings are his Naval Uniform and a large number of photos, including some taken in Spain, Italy and other European/Mediteranien ports. He served for 3-4yrs during the Korean War. My Uncle, John J. Pasquale was a Navy Corpsman from 1969 to 1977, and he suggested I contact you regarding any info you might have on my Step-Father, and that you might be interested in photos, etc. which he left me. I can be contacted at the above e-mail address or you may, with his permission, contact thru my uncle at jjp6426@yahoo.com.
I appreciate any assistance you may be able to provide.

I was stationed aboard the Roosevelt from 76 to 77, did a Med cruise. I was there when we collided with a Lebanese oil tanker off the coast of Italy. We were drydocked there for repairs for one month before returning back to the states. I was assigned to the v-3 division yet I do not see my name in the ship’s crew roster for that year.

  15. Engineering department 1963-65… Left the Rosie at sea in the fall of 1965…was the B. Division officer. Lots of good memories…some of which I am sharing under sea stories. Would love to hear from shipmates: tom.a.lutz@gmail.com
