Larry, my memory is not perfect and I could be wrong. I did not go ashore there, but remember guys talking that did. Could have been a different year, but I don’t think so.

  2. No mention of it in the VA-15 log. Don’t know where to look now. None of the other squadrons on that cruise have an accessable log page.

Also, Larry, at some point on the 75 cruise, we were scheduled to visit Istanbul, Turkey but went to Izmir instead. We were only there for a day or two.

  4. Thanks Bill, I just got the in port dates from the VA-15 history website. You pushed me to go look. I’m revising the OPHIST as we speak.

Larry, I know it’s not much help, but I was looking at the operational history and saw that the dates for the May 75 visit to Naples had question marks. I flew off the ship on the 10th but was still in Rota about a week later, when my best friends arrived from the ship on their way home also. They said they walked off in Naples. That would have been about the 17th.

  6. Don’t stop looking at ebay tho. Once in a while you can grab one before the dealers buy it. They don’t seem to bid too high but they sure ask a lot when they sell them.

  7. Thanks for your kind words Fred. Your book will be scanned in turn. Remember that the ’62-63 book is the one with no group pictures and no names.

  8. Not too large to scan but there are two in front of that one yet to scan. It’s quite a slow process and gets done as time permits.

  9. Larry
Will you be scanning the 1961 cruise book, or is that one also to large to scan??
My kids did a job on mine. If I’m not able to get a disc I will replace it.

    Thanks Larry L

  10. Larry, I would be very interested in the ’62-63 Med Cruise book CD when you get around to it.
Thanks for all your hard work concerning ALL things FDR. You are a tremendous asset to this organization and are deeply appreciated by many of us. THANKS !!

  11. Thanks Larry and Bill for the feed back It may very well have happened on training exercise after we returned I wish my memory was better I do know it had to be before Feb 1976 as that was when I went res.3

  12. The only mention of a death during the 75 cruise was of an enlisted man from IM-3 Divn. There was a midair on 25 May but evryone survived.

  13. Larry I don’t know if you are still working on this project just want to say thanks. I was wondering why no one has commented on the crash that killed the two pilots in 1975 I often tell my kids grand kids about that be nice if I could remember there names.

  14. Jim Burroughs VF-84

I was reading the article Robert Schnell VF-84 wrote on the F8 from VFP-63 that was lost at sea ,the pilot LT Steams. I was on the deck that day, they were launching port side cats. When something broke under the air craft, that was it he was on his own. Down the deck and into the water he went . Some of us ran over to the side to see the aircraft in the water as the ship turned starboard. A sad day.

  15. Jimmy Dibilio’s pictures of the scrap yard. I just noticed that the VietNam ribbon bars are still on the starbard side of the bridge.

  16. I’m working on scanning the ’65 book at the moment. The 63/64 book will be next. It takes a while to scan them with all the other things I have to do so please be patient.

  17. I’m afraid that, due to it’s large size, I’m unable to scan the pages to make a CD of it. I suggest you watch eBay for one (reasonably priced of course).

  18. Ray Douglas Sugg

I would like a CD or a copy of the 1957-58 Med Cruise book. Would either be available anytime in future? Thanks, Ray

  19. I see there is an entry for the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation 21-Oct-66
21-Oct-66. I don’t have that listed on my DD214. Who qualifies for this ribbon. I was a crew member Mar-65 thru Jun-68

  20. I’ve been looking for information on the Roosevelt for years 65-67, which is when my father, Michael Pinnix, served as an Aerographer’s mate. This site has been a great resource and thank you for all the hard work you have done!
