HAVE YOU CHECKED THE HOME PAGE FOR THE LATEST INFO?

I have managed to resurrect some of the Guest Books from the previous FDR Websites. There are some that are lost forever but this is the best there is at the moment. There is a lot of good stuff there.

SO

Please put your email address in your message so your shipmates can get back to you (if they can remember you).

There is software on board that makes it unreadable to the “bots” who collect that sort of stuff.

All entries must be approved before they will appear in the book. Any inappropriate entries, as well as those with invalid email addresses, will be deleted and will not appear. I check daily so don’t despair if your entry doesn’t appear immediately.

Due to a rash of automated spam messages we now use “captcha” authentication.  Just enter the “captcha” code and then SUBMIT. Don’t worry about upper or lower case….either will work. If you have trouble reading it just click the little button to the right and it will “refresh”. Thanks!

Many shipmates have told me, via email, about having visited this site. Oddly many have not left entries here for their shipmates to see. THEY do wonder how you are and probably would love to hear from you. This is a great way get back in contact.

REMEMBER….THE ONLY  WAY FOR YOUR SHIPMATES TO GET IN CONTACT WITH YOU IS HAVING YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS IN YOUR MESSAGE

For YOUR protection – No home phone numbers or addresses please. Please save that for when you make email contact.

REMEMBER….IF YOU WANT TO BE CONTACTED MAKE SURE YOU PUT YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS IN THE BODY OF YOUR MESSAGE

  1. Curtis "Terry" Green

Very glad that I found this website! I was an RM3 in the CR Division when I was separated in August, 1973. First reported aboard in August, 1971 when Rosie returned from the Med Cruise. I arrived in Mayport in May, 1971 and was put to work in the personnel office because so many new crew were reporting to Rosie at that time.

I would like to track down at least some of the men I served with. So if anyone knows how to contact any of the following men, I’d sure appreciate an email about how to do so:
    WO2 Walter or William Wetmore
    RM2 Bobby Watson
    RM2 Jeff Hamel
    RMSN Mark Farrar
    RM2 Ron “Sammy” Spiers
    RM3 Jeff Brezius
    RM2 Don Novak
    RM2 Pat Courtney

    My email address is: curtisgreen30@tx.rr.com

I will respond to any/all emails regarding any of these men or the Rosie in general.

Best wishes to all former crew members of Roosevelt!!

  3. I did not serve aboard the Roosevelt, but my father did. He’s Tim Hensley, and was in the Navy from 1966-1970. He tells stories about his time in the Mediterranean, but mostly he tells about Newfoundland. If any of you remember him, please contact me at piperdbh@hotmail.com

  8. Robert (Bob) Pillion

I served on the Rosie from about Sep or Oct 1960 until about Nov 1961 when I was transferred to the USS Kennebec AO36 just being pulled from mothballs in Bayonne, NJ. I was an RM3 when I left the FDR soon to be promoted to RM2 as I arrived in Norfolk for Precommissioning school. The CR Div was my home while on board and I enjoyed ever moment, even the long hours on watch due to personnel shortages. After I finished my tour with the Navy and Reserve duty I reenlisted in the USNR in Joliet, IL and stayed for another year and a half when I decided to bo back on AD. After shopping around my decision was the Army and flight school. My total commitment was 35 years active and reserve time. So you never know about these complainers of which I was one.

  9. very well done site. it brings back a lot of good memories. i was on the rosie from 1971 through 1972. did both med cruises. enjoyed seeing names of guys i had not seen for a long time. keep up the good work.

  10. I was in VFP-62 – Fightin Photo, Med Cruise 67/68. Anyone remember the Russian Destroyer #504 that cruised in front of the Rosie when the Skipper put the A-4 Tanker on the Cat and launched it, soaring just barely over it and sent them scrambling off our port side a few nautical miles?? The Destroyer ultimately came up along side, just cruising, with their sailors and ours exchanging one finger salutes. What a gas!!! A ships company Photo mate did get some nice shots of the Russians, and it was published in Time Magazine as well as the Navy Times.

Great memories, Great stories, & Great People. Had real decent liberty calls & just had the time of my life.

Love to hear from anyone that was there….Go Navy. Thanx for the site, it’s fantastic, 4.0

  11. Served on the Rosie from 59-61 Fox Division. Three tours in the Med. Looking for Tony Chelewski, who was in V-6

  12. I served on the Rosie, 1972 AIMD. I was transfered from VR-24 Naples to the Rosie when she was leaving the Med out of Athens.

I’ve had a couple of people who shared a place in Mayport contact me recently and sparked my interest in seeing if there are other lost souls out there.

The Rosie was a great ship and the experiences were interesting to say the least. Give a shout if you can shake the cobwebs from this old salts head.

  13. Nancy Moodie for William W. Wooden

My dad was aboard the FDR as a V2 division officer in the early 50’s for 3 tours to the Med. Dad is 89 now. He loved his Navy days!

  14. I served aboard Rosie October 1975 to June 1977. I suspect that the rapid demise of Rosie at the end of her last cruise is probably due to the fact that Rosie and her task force made monkey’s out of her counterpart during the NATO exercise with the JFK and her task force. Rosie could go places that the JFK couldn’t. The only thing that was not so great on her last tour was that we spent about 60 percent of our port of calls for liberty in Italy. Didn’t get any real good ports till we started home. But, Rosie was a Champ. Though that ships collision in the straits of messina sure did mess things up for almost a month sitting in Naples. Cork screw shaft and concrete rudder she still bested the sixth fleet. Not long after her demise the Navy was looking for her? And I find that unusual. Didn’t they know what happened to her? Someone was looking to convert her to an all jump jet platform. Guess we’ll never know how that would have worked.

  15. I had the privilege of serving on the “rosie” from 1956-1958 as YNT3 in the operations and administrative divisions…loved Europe(especially PARIS,FRANCE as an 18 year-old sailor)…had “shore patrol” at Rock of Gibraltar,”swam with the sharks” at FRENCH RIVIERRA….have many memories of the “good ol days”….GO NAVY…

  16. Paula Doughtie for James Doughtie

My father, James Doughtie, was on this ship at some point in his career, I believe it was early to late 1940’s. He was in World War II and retired in 1967. My father is still living and loves talking about his time onboard. He lets everyone know that you weren’t considered a REAL Sailor unless you served on ships 🙂 I look forward to researching and talking with whomever may remeber the name….James Doughtie.
