Comments: Had I not been an aeromedical technician, and the recent
completion of independent duty school, I could have been assigned to a
destroyer out of Mayport. Such would have been great duty, but I can
imagine that the ride offered by the Bay of Biscay would have caused me to
wish I was aboard the Rosey. And, glad I was to be billeted on the Rosey.
The medical department's previous ORE rankings were "satisfactory", but
not sufficiently reflective of the talent, knowledge, skills and
experiences of HMs and DTs assigned. Much more was required of hospital
corpsmen and dental technicians. And, intensive training of crew, and
specifically fire parties in first aid was initiated. Such resulted in the
next ORE being 97%. The 10 month deployment occurred because the
designated carrier could not meet its deployment requirements. I can't at
this moment remember the name of the smaller carrier which relieved the
Rosey, but you can bet it was not the Sara(cropolis), or the Ken not today
(Kennedy). The Rosey has always been a work horse of the fleet. And, with
out the right crews, it could have never achieved effective completions of
its objectives, and missions. A damn good ship, with a solid history
      worthy of rememberance.

Comments: I have many fond and not so fond memories. The first time I saw
Rosey she was just a spot in the Med. I was sitting in a C3 Cod about to
land on her back. Who knew at that time I would soon be working on the
same Arresting that was about to keep me alive. I worked in several places
while on board. My first stop was in OE div. working in the TV and Radio
studio. What a great group of guys. I met Greg there and went on to help
him with his race car.I had the morning radio show. I also did the morning
news and weather before the morning movie. From here I went to the mess
hall. Hey Snowden if your out there write me. Then I went to V2 AG. What a
riot. I met some of the greatest guys. I was still 18 and they helped me
grow up quick. They taught me things I have never forgotten. It was kind
of odd to know if you made a mistake it could cost a pilot his life. As I
said there were bad time as well, like the storm that knocked off a hanger
bay door and killed one person. The time I spent visiting the Marines
wasn't that great either. But at least it was considered good time by the
Navy. When it came time to think about staying in the Navy, It wasn't even
close. I had a wife at home. Well its been 30 years since I left the Navy
and it was a good choice. I'm still with my wife. If anyone out there that
remembers Mike Weyrick send an Email my way. I have some old films of a
      good time on board.

Comments: Dear Fellow Shipmates, I have read so many warm and fuzzy notes
recounting the years on the Rosy. It does fill my mind with fond memories
of my childhood days. I have found a few of my old shipmates from days
gone by,but no one want,s to respond. I don,t know if they don,t pay any
attention to this website or they think that thirty years ago was
yesterday. I have an old friend Dennis who I remember fondly who I have
written to several times without a respose. I remember giving him a
nickname that he did not care for. I didn,t think it would be an issue for
thirty years. I remember my chief Dutch Lundy with smiles and fond
mwmories. I was unable to make ships deployment one winter because of a
snowstorm. I was in Maine on leave in 1965. I stayed in mayport for a few
weeks before the ship came back to port. The chiefs family had me over for
dinner several times and his family made me so welcome. I will never
forget that kindness. But I wan,t to set the record straight, I was not
the one who put the dent in the fender of the chief,s car.Even though I
had to pay for it. I wan,t to ask about Tommy Tamen AC1, Jim Voss AC1,Jim
used to taylor my uiforms and make me look so cool. I want to let the
person who gluded my friend,s and my guitars together that I think that
sucked and I will never forget it. Also whoever threw my super coffee cup
overboard in the middle of the Pacific Ocean that was also a stupid thing
to do and I will never forget that either. I must also say that I will
never forget AC2 Pat Melcher as we were wrawling through the slop trenches
as we crossed the equater during our initation into the relm neptune "IS
THAT THE BEST YOU CAN DO"as he was whippimg ourbuts with firehoses as we
crawled along the flghtdeck on our way to imortality. In conclusion I must
make mention to our buddy "Stoiber". I don,t remember his last name but I
know that when we were all going through our initation into the relm of
KING NEPTUNE he was somewhere else!! My times aboard the Rosey were good
and not so good. If I could sit down with an old crewmember and have a few
beers and think about those 4 years, they would be the best years of my
young life. I wish my old shipmates the very best. may you all have fair
winds and following seas and I,t would please me very much to hear from
any of you. Even "STOIBER. But I know that will never
      happen.Sincerely,Jeffrey Heath

Comments: Just found you excellent site. Thanks for the memories!
Made FDR Gitmo Cruise Jan 1950 based at Norfolk in flying the TBM.
Then the AD SkyRaider based at Atlantic City again to Gitmo in Oct-Nov 1950 followed by a Jan-May Med cruise in 1951 in VC-33 Det 7 flying the the AD4N night attack mission and AD4Q towing AbleDogs. Had more CLs day and night aboard the FDR of the 13 I flew off of between 1948 and 1955.
But if you were bunked under the flight deck aft, you didn't appreciate a landing over you. It sounded just like a loud crash, which it was! Or more commonly refered to as, a carrier landing!
Once was towing for FDR in Med when a FDR 5 incher exploded next to the AD4Q and not the towed radar target! The Gun Director let the gun's radar track up the mile long cable and lock on to my AbleDog, proving it is a very accurate AAA shooting device. That round going off by my wing is well remembered and it prepared me for happenings in SEA, mostly over Laos some years later while drivng machines for Air America. Best wishes to all who served aboard CVB-42.

Worked in Maintainance Control for Chief Shook and never really worked the AO shop with Lamb, Bell and those guys. Saw some names here of guys I remember from that time and found them in the cruise books I still have. Lots of memories ... the F4 crash that took out the catwalk, the A3 cold cat shot, airshows for the foreign dignitries where we'd blow-up a lot of fish ... liberty in wild places in the Med ... wow ... did we do all of that? It's amazing we all survived. Rgards to all who might have known me.

Comments: I think that the ship had the biggest impact on the world at the port of Cape Town in Febuary of 1967 when the ships crew could not take liberty in this strange and so friendly port. So the State Department and the ships command aloud the city to take liberty on the ship. We had visitors come on the Rosy for 2 days 6 abreast lines were three blocks long. I truely think that this was the start of stability in South Africa Not a plane left the deck not a bomb was dropped. It was the friendly spirt of the crew that had won the day. South Africa is not a paradise that is for sure but compared to most of the rest of that continent it shows promise

Comments: I was on the infamous 10 month Med Cruise in 1972, and had the dubious honor of being the first person on the ship to know when we'd return. I was on watch working one of the three circuits we had set up that day and have a vivid memory of reading the message as it was coming in. I even remember which circuit and the number of the message!
Looking back, I enjoyed my time in the Med and on the Roosevelt, although like most aspects of the past, one tends to remember the good parts to forget the bad.

Comments: Transferred from the Midway (CVA41) to Rosie (CVA42) in 76 for the final Med cruise. Caught the ship from Rota Spain and served on her for the duration of the cruise. Was there for the at sea collision with the freighter in the Straits of Messina. Had some good times on board, except for dry dock period after the collision. And it was great coming home to Mayport for the last time.

Comments: I remember the fire in '66. It happened soon after the Oriskany blew up. My GQ station was a repair locker on the mess decks. If it hadn't been for some true heros in Hangar Bay 4, the stern would have been blown off (with me in it). The hangar bay was full of ordinance and dozens of men moved into harm's way to dump it all into the sea.

Comments: I remember the horrible fire in C530 storeroom where they stored paint and paint thinners. During an UNREP loading Calcium Hydrochloride (Laundry bleach I think, can't be mixed with anything but water)well the load broke and cascaded through several hatches, hit bottom and exploded into flames. Several sailors died that day.

Earnest Coleman was the supply officer during all of my tour and Lcdr. Thomas Simms was his assistant supply officer during most of my stay. I came aboard as an E-3 and left as an SK2. They were great officers to work for.

All the good friends and great times I will never forget. Esp Christmas in Barcelona Spain, dining at Los caracolas and partying at the Rialto ! I don't miss them long chow lines or the powder milk..

Hi Richard,
I can't say I remember you, but the name sure sounds familiar to me.
I was in V-3 ordnance same period as you.
Everyone called me "Ma" Perkins.
Did you know anyone in V-3?
We have had several reunions of the Ordnance guys and they were some of the best times of my life, just seeing old buddies and retelling the old sea stories.
I went to book camp at Great Lakes, Company 433. After boot, went straight aboard FDR. Stayed aboard until Dec 1953 when I was transferred to VS 39 at Quonset Point, Rhode Island. While there our squadron made cruises aboard the Valley Forge and the Antietam. I was discharged in Sep 1954. Went to work for the Navy.
Retired in 1988.

Comments: I congratulate you in a really fine website. Went to Google on a whim and hit CVA 42, here I am.
I must say that the two plus years I spent on the Roosevelt were some of the best of my life. I made two Med cruises and saw parts of the world at goverment expense that I would have never seen. Being that I worked in the OPS Office from 7 pm to 7 am while at sea and wrote/printed/distributed the "Green Sheet" I got to see all of the ship and met some really fine men. Because of my duties I had access to all parts (except the nuclear weapons area) of the ship from the engineering spaces to the weather decks above the bridge. On my off hours I was able to get to the observation area above the bridge and watch air/ops on the catapult. I got such a rush watching the F4 go off the starboard cat with the blast deflectors throwing the hot exhaust right up to me with the sound of the afterburners pushing their blue/orange flames. The sounds, smells, heat and vibrations were unforgetable. I have some great pictures from up there. Also, being part of the OP Division of the Operations Department I was berthed with the photomates and they gave me some really great photos of the ship, Russian Bear overflights and A7 flights over snow covered mountains. I have a wonderful collection of photographic memories.
The above email address is only good until the end of June 2003. My wife and I are moving and I will have to post a new address as soon as I have one.
Thanks for this website and for reading the scant memories of a boy who became a man on the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt CVA 42. Some of the best years of my life.

Comments: I worked on the fight deck. I saw hundreds of take offs and landings while standing near the island. At times when an F4U took off as it reached the end of flight deck it sounded as if the engine cut out for two seconds. The plane would drop down several feet and then climb back up. Any F4U pilots or mechanics know what I am talking about? Drop in fuel pressure?? Wind sheer?? Can't believe it would be the mags. The ADs never did this. With a good head wind an AD could take off in 20 feet and have to fly a couple of feet above the deck until reaching the bow. ANYONE ??

Comments: I would like to hear from some FOX Div sailors from that period. I worked usually in the foward 37 Fire control system director above the bridge. I enjoyed my tour of the NAVY on the Rosie and as others have said, "I wouldn't trade to for a million dollar ." I might have bitched at the time, but as I reminisce, I think what a great experience I had. If only today's kids had such an opportunity. I have lots of photos of flight ops, and even some photos someplace of the Russian ships that were around when we were in the Med. I took the photos of the Russian ships through the range finder in the foward director. Well, I hope that I hear from some of you FOX Div. Sailors of that period.

Comments: Hello -I was EM2 and was in charge of the movie booth the whole time I was on the "Rosie". Boy were those good times. Showing movies all over the ship, to the Admiral, Captain in their state rooms, officers in the ward room (they loved those westerns),checking out movies to the different ready rooms, transfering movies to ships along side at night. Some fun. Does anyone remember the Movie Booth in the aft capstan machinery room under the fantail?

Thank you for your steadfast protection of our freedom in the United States. It is because of your sacrifices that we can enjoy the fullness of our lives.

That is not true. God Bless you all.

But it was fun while it lasted. I would like stories for our daughter to learn why he was such a fun guy. Tell me his name so I know you know who I am talking about. Rememebr John Pelley and a Bill Collister. I remember when the "Rosie" collided with the Liberian tanker - took 10 days for Red Cross to let me know Nelly was OK though his bunk was one of the ones wiped out. I know where two of the Rosie's ship's clocks ended up....wish it were me but...

Comments: I was aboard the FDR TAD with the Photo Recon Squadron VFP-63 out of Miramar. Since this was her last cruise I thought a lot about her history while having the time of my life on that Med cruise.I was only 20 and seeing the world for the first time. I regret we never made Greece or Turkey because of political unrest at the time.I worked the flight deck during the day as a PH1 and worked a movie projector at night for my sqaudron's officers and crew.We lost one of our birds from a FD accident. Shook up the young pilot a little.
Like most of us I enjoyed the spectacular sunsets and the ocean when it looked like a sheet of glass...and watching Dolphin play below the ship's bow.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Steve's '72 Med cruise account. My experiences were almost the same....except the FDR was 5 years older and on her last proud cruise. I'll always miss her. (Now if I could only get a hold of the cruise book I ordered back then but never received.Anybody out there know how to dredge one up?

Comments: The day I came aboard they were removing the last of the wooden deck on #3 elevator. Did 2 Med cruises, one for six months and one for 10 months. Due to Nam they sent several east coast carriers to WESTPAC and we got extended, thus the 10 month Med cruise. On my first cruise, as we were leaving Mayport, one of the tugs rammed a whole in the starboard side, an airwing berthing compartment I believe. We anchored off GITMO, they put a patch on it, and off we went to the Med. Made me wonder what I got myself into at that point! :)

I later was assigned to A-1 Hydraulics where we recabled the deck edge elevator in Naples harbor. When I made First class I took over the AC&R shop and then later went to the MAA force. I learned alot on this ship and the most memorable thin that happened was that my son was born while I was stationed here

Oserved pilot's black silhouette exiting the plane through the yellow flams. Deck crew members fought the fire and pushed aircraft over the side. We headed for Naples. As a ships company seaman Boatswain's Mate Stricker, worked refueling, replenishing, highlining, Bridge watches, painting and manning the starboard aft 5" gun mount during GQ. Rosie gave me lots of stories, while she trained a teenage boy to quickly become a responsible young man.
