Made the rest of the Med cruise returning to the yards in Portsmouth during May '68. After she was retrofitted we were underway to GITMO for shakedown. While there I received an 'early out' in October 1969 and left active duty status. Fond memories of the ship's company and air wing (well, most of them anyway).

Comments: I will never forget the day I checked in. I met the ship in Athens. I was fresh out of CS "A" school and caught the launch about 22:00. I was in awe looking at this great shadow of a ship against the starlit sky. all the light I saw was the "42" in lights on the island. I spent three great years on her. I loved her and respected her from the start. I had some great times. I never could understand why peopled bitched on board. She was the safest ship to be on. I remember fondly that Christmas/ New years in 73. I went ashore and was stuck for 7 days because of the wheather. Does anyone remember that? I had to go to the payroll office on one of the ships lucky enough to be docked in port. I also remember the 4 months in dry dock in Philly. T ship seemed twice it's size out of the water. I remember the big rust hole in her bow below the water line. What a blast. The cruise in 75 was a great time too. I left her the same way I first boarded her. I was flown by helo from her in Athens three years to the month. 27 years have gone by since then and I think of "Rosey" more often now that I am older. I am proud to be a Veteren of the carrier fleet.

Comments: What great memories. We had such a blast on the two cruises, Our band Second Sun gigged at the EM club in Athens and Barcelona, the American girls school in Thessolanika (email me for details on THAT) , the Officers Club in Athens, as well as countless shows in the hangar bay during the Yom Kippor crisis off the coast of Isreal. We actually played a few times during white lights out, lots of stoners having fun listening with the dim lit red background. I would love to touch base with Jim Harkins, Lt. Walker, Tom Verdick, Carl Bethea, Amoeba from Mars, John Coty, Ed Ratchy, Mike Williams, Jim Migliola, any of the other guys we used to hang with. Of course we all worked our regular jobs in AIMD electronics shop fixing airplane black boxes. Anybody in WC 610 or 650 give me a shout its been too long. I did touch base with J Trichler 18 months ago, who told me 1st class Larry Wise had passed away. He was a great friend and Leader and never hesitated to kick my ass when it was well deserved. Anyone who made the 73-74 cruise will remember This picture :

Comments: shipmates I'm sure I've got the record for being one of the weirdest sailors to ever have sailed abord the Roosevelt. Today,Vetrans day 2002 I award myself the 3rd class crow. Its been 24 yrs since our last glorious cruise;A harrier flipping upside down, running into a freighter,An Airdale Chief smashed by a falling hanger bay door,a broken neck due to a missing ladder,a few permanent last swims, and the abolishment of the last red line brig. I truly believe we earned our Vietnam service Ribbons as it was not an easy or happy time to be a sailor. I'm sure the decommisioning crew remembers the Marine barracks in Norfolk,Va. three college degrees and 24 yrs of electronic /electrical experience later I would like to tell my Chiefs how I still feel. ETN-3 Kim Kaminski, you red neck Ohio boy,I taught myself how to repair the transmitters and transceivers of radio 2 and 3 while you hung out in the radar rms on the mast and rebuilt your Harley below decks. Shipmates although I sang at your Catholic folk masses I'll forever be a Chippewa American Indian. Dave Djaydjack(sp) you ran back to Mich. and ended up in electronics, how are you? We sang at alot of folk masses ! no matter how good or bad your time on the Roosevelt was ,some things just don't go away. I seriously salute the IC-3 shipmate that got rich on the last cruise. Forever nautical, Al

Comments: I've been out of touch with shipmates for too many years. This web site is a real find. Served as Asst. to the DCA and then as the Auxiliaries D.O. with fond memories of the Rosie and the experience it provideded me.
Would do it all over again if given the opportunity. I hope to renew old shipmate relationships and perhaps find some new ones. My wifes dealing with geneology has shown me the importance of maintaining contacts.
Hope to hear from you.

Comments: Since I was a little boy growing up in Portugal, I always wanted to serve on a navy ship, could not wait to sign up and join the US Navy. I was on the Uss Gilmore AS-16 first, but the Rosie, was special, when I was assigned to her, Man! was I proud !!
My fond memories were many, I remember the steak and Lobster on fridays. I remember eating portugeuse sausage that my grandmother mailed to me, it took 3 mths to reach us at sea! All my shipmates in A div would enjoy that sausage!
I remember being on the mid watch once ( 1976, last cruise), and I heard something rolling around in the compartment next to ours, it sounded like a bowling ball hitting the bulkhead. When the officer investigated my complaint we went to General Quarters!!! It was a large 500 LB BOMB!! that came loose and was rolling from bulkhead to bulkhead!!
I remember the fight we had with the officers, when they stole our movie projector!!
And I was in sick bay, and had just had surgery, when we collided with a tanker near the straights of messina. I rolled out of the bed in sick bay, boy was that painful!
I remeber the monkey watch for all the new sailors we had with us on that last cruise.
I can still remember those things that the chief would say, like " the sweat off my balls"!! it all makes me laugh.
All the good times I had on the FDR, is what inspired me to stay on with the Navy, and that is why..26 yrs later I retired as a ENC, in the Naval Reserve (MIUW 208). Thanks Rosie for all the good memories.

With a reunion in mind, I have made a gallant effort in an attempt to contact as many of you as possible. With contacts leading to other contacts, I was always conscious of what might come back. I had some physical addresses that I sent letters to, some never responded. I new that some would not, because they could not, and I wish now that I had never started this. I wish to ask any of you who read this to consider it a memorial and to say a prayer and thank God for giving you the opportunity to know and befriend Tommy Yurko who passed away from a massive heart attack in 1999. If it's any consolation, I recall that he had wanted (in 1970) a red Corvette. I still remember seeing his face when he got his wish. God Bless America and Tom Yurko, and not necessarily in that order.

Comments: When FDR was decom'd and scrapped in 1977, IKE was fitting out; I was aboard IKE in 84-85 and was told when asked why the old dates on the ship's helm and engine telegraph order that they came from FDR; also, machines in ship's laundry were from FDR I was told as well. Do not know if these items have remained through the various COH's, but there is a good chance that the bridge items have not been altered or changed out. Maybe part of FDR is still sailing the seven seas. . . .

Comments: Lee was my father. He passed away 1986 near NAS JAX, in Orange Park FL. I was 15 when he died, too you to think any of my father's 'old days' stories were for real. Sadly the only photo from his service days is one of him in Uniform taken during leave to see his father in New York. I do not understand the "Lingo" of a NAVY man, but in my words, my father was an Airplane Mechanic, and would also paint the near naked ladies and Tigers on the planes for the pilots.
Served on the FDR 1951-1958. Served Eastern Atlantic and Medeterranean, from Sept 51 to Jan 52 with Attack Squadron 175.
Stationed at Nas Jax 1951-1955, Nas Cecil Field, Nas Mayport, Nas PNCLA, Recsta Brooklyn-sign up 1950.
participated in "Operation Mainbrage?(not legible). Also "Operation Longstep 1952.
Became a member of Ancient and honorable "Blue Nose" Sept 1952 in Artic Regions.
Would love to hear from anyone who knew my father. What I would give to hear those stories now. His daughter, Betty Landram Edmonds

Comments: my grandfather, Rufus Young Adamson, was a crewmember aboard the Franklin. I used to look at his cruise books as a child. Now the cruise books are missing and he has long passed away. I am very interested in the Franklin as it was the only ship which he was attached, and because he and I are the only former navy members in my family.

Comments: I would like to begin by saying that I am writing this on behalf of my father, Edward Lanphier, who I am not in frequent contact with, but would like this info to be known by his former shipmates, as well as find out a little more for myself, if possible. I do know that he was a plane captain (Brown shirt)for a F-4 squadron at some point and carried the rank of Airman. I believe that he was also an Air crewman for an A-3 Skywarrior squadron for some time. Which one was aboard the FDR or the Midway I can not be sure. As I said I have not heard from him for some time but he does reside in upstate NY currently, and I have in the past seen quite a bit of his tour books, in one of which was a picture depicting a Crusader loosing its port side landing gear on a day trap and going over the edge, the pilot ejecting. He also told me stories of once being shot down in an A-3 (starboard engine, I believe) over Vietnam during one of his tours as an Air crewman. I have seen his wings, so I can only assume this is accurate. I also know that he had numerous tour stops in Europe and Japan. I know this is all very vague and not too helpful, but I just hoped that someone out there would recognize the name and what info there is and maybe remember a few things. I apoligize that I cannot help more. Of course any info or correspondence would be more than welcome and I would definatley do my best to realy any and all info on to him. Good Luck and Full Speed Ahead!

Released from Active Duty day before ship sailed to Vietnam. Was on the beach turn-around crew at leeward point Gitmo when first and only time an F-4 was launched with its wings folding as it went down the Cat.
and watched it catch the arresting cable at the end of the runway on leeward point. The Air Force said it couldn't be done, but I watched VF-14 do it.

Comments: 2 Med cruises during Vietnam...good duty for a 2 year reserve! Being in the boiler room was no picnic, though. My first class petty officer wigged out one day and had to be flown off the ship in the middle of a trans Atlantic crossing. I remember our planes coming back from flight-op's damaged due to clipping wings with Egyptian-Russian built "Badger" aircraft while escorting them away from buzzing our flight deck.

The platform was on the back side of the island several decks up. An A4 Skyhawk landed and its landing gear collapsed. The plane skidded across the deck with its bombs still under the wings right below us. The pilot, the guys from OE div., and several others were being watched over that day.

to time and how I enjoyed being at sea. Found a framed photo of the
Rosie at a community yard sale about two years ago...how's that for a chance find? I was not sure when she'd been scrapped and just now found that out. Always have regretted that I don't have a bit of hardware from her, and had I known when she was being scrapped, I'd
have tried to get my hands on a piece. I was in the 1st Division for 2
years and then transferred to the Executive Division, Public Information Office. It's nice to find this website. I'll stop in from time
to time.

Comments: I ventured on board the FDR when it was commissioned in 1945 and was wow'd by her size and capabilities. I had served on board USS AARON WARD (DM34). She had distinguised herself while battling kamikazes off Okinawa prior to and during the invasion in 1945. After suffering severe damage and casualties we were fortunate to bring her back to Brooklyn Navy Yard where she was decommissioned for scrap. Her deserted hulk was tied up on the bow of the FDR at the time the FDR was commissioned; a memorable event for me.

Comments: Made three Med cruises, two trips to the Brooklyn yards, several other ports of call and good golly at the trips to Gitmo. I remember Louis Boler, Tibedau, Daniels, Philip Menna, and others. While on the Rosie we had several colisions with other ships, one disasterous fire that sent us to the yards, lost a blade off a propeller that sent us to the yards, and other catastrophys.

Reading other messages brought back some memories.
During Hurricane Donna: tying ourselves into our racks (O2 level just below arresting gear), flooding of officers\' country just below cats, severely bent railings on flight deck catwalks, nothing but crackers and black coffee in mess hall. Also, what about the \"public toilets\" in Tripoli...open courtyards with rocks to sit on. Does anyone remember the Hippodrome(?) in Naples or Moriarty\'s on Kings Hwy. in Brooklyn? Times have changed.

Med cruise in 1961, NY in 1960 and 1962, Mayport-Jacksonville, Naples, swimming in Gitmo Bay, Hurricane Donna, etc. Operated #1 & #3 below-deck cat consoles at various times to launch aircraft. What a thrill for a 18-20 yr-old! I grew up fast on the Rosie! Does anyone remember Chief Hoskins, our V-2 Chief and Chief Master at Arms of the ship? Stereotype of the tough old salt, but really a great person as I look back now. Would appreciate contact from any who served with me. Fred \"Rags\" Ragsdale

Comments: We made the Med cruise in 62/63, with CVG-1. It was the coldest winter in 100 years. It even snowed at sea. We had a rather large conflagration in November 62 when an AD (A1) went up the axial deck in a blinding rain storm, hitting several A/C on the bow. We lost several aircraft in the ensuing fire. The magnesium heat shield around the engine in one of our F8's caught ignited, causing a brilliant flash and fire. A fork lift was used to push it over the side. We just about depleted the pool of replacement aircraft in Rota, Spain.
In the Spring of the year we almost cut a Russian Trawler in half, when she wouldn't heave to as we were recovering aircraft. I recall seeing their mast heave over as it passed near our angle dangle. Later in the month, a trawler sailed aft of us as we exited Istanbul via the Dardenelles/Bosporus. The skipper waited until the wind was right and then "blew the stacks", sending soot over the trawler. Our "Homeward Bound" pennent almost seemed to reach the trawler, as we entered the Med "on the way home".

Comments: I would like to hear from some FOX Div sailors from that period. I usually worked in the foward 37 Fire control system director above the bridge. I
enjoyed my tour of the NAVY on the Rosie and as others have said, "I wouldn't trade to for a million dollars." I might have bitched at the time, but as I reminisce, I think what a great experience I had. I got to see a lot of the world, which would never have happened if I hadn't been aboard the Rosie. She wasn't called the Roamin Rosie for nothing. If only today's kids had such an opportunity. I have lots of photos of flight ops, and even some photos someplace of the Russian ships that were around when we were in the Med. I took the photos of the Russian ships through the range finder in the
foward director. Well, I hope that I hear from some of you FOX Div. Sailors of that period.

Years aboard: Ships Company "R" Div. 1975-Decom.
Comments: I was the assistant "R" Div. officer and later "R" Div. officer in the Engineering Dept. After decommissioning, I was assigned to INACSHIPFAC in Portsmouth, Va. as engineering officer to coordinate with the yards the removal of equipment for the Navy. I was the last crew member to depart the FDR; spent the last night aboard at Wiskey anchorage in the Elizabeth river; officially handed over the ship to Kearney Ship Yards for scrap and departed ship the next morning. Kearney purchased the ship for $1.5 mil. after we had removed what the Navy wanted to keep. What a waste after a $12.5 mil. "minor" refit at JAX Shipyards prior to our last Med Cruise. Ship ws still in excellent operating condition; set high-speed run record on only 8 of 12 boilers on final Atlantic crossing returning to CONUS. Still remember pulling away from "Rosie" for the last time. Very sad to think of her scrapped, and of the Coral Sea now partially scrapped and rusting into oblivian. Thank God U.S.S. Midway was saved; closest I can get to showing my children my class of carrier. I look forward to its opening this summer.

Years aboard: 1961 thru 1963 V4 division (Fuel flight crews)
Comments: I was orginally the catapault V2 division. However, I was transferred to the V4 (if I remember correctly) division. It was the division that fueled the planes after landing. I also did messhall duty for about six months. When I first boarded the FDR, the Captain of the ship was a Captain Hessel. I have a lot of great stories to tell and I wish someone would contact me. Especially if they served during my time (61 thru 63) and if they did anything at all on the flight deck. However, as with most of the other sailors on the ship at that time - our friends were not just relegated to where you worked. We were all on an underground city and I knew people in dozens of division throughout the ship and in every noon and cranny. I happened to be from New York, but my buddies were guys from all over the USA. It would be great if I could hear from someone who was there or someone who knew me. Some people had trouble pronouncing my name and used to call me Coco Cola. Please contact me ASAP
