HAVE YOU CHECKED THE HOME PAGE FOR THE LATEST INFO?

I have managed to resurrect some of the Guest Books from the previous FDR Websites. There are some that are lost forever but this is the best there is at the moment. There is a lot of good stuff there.

Click on the year you want to view. Click on the left arrow at the top of your browser to return to this page.

SO

Please put your email address in your message so your shipmates can get back to you (if they can remember you).

There is software on board that makes it unreadable to the “bots” who collect that sort of stuff.

All entries must be approved before they will appear in the book. Any inappropriate entries, as well as those with invalid email addresses, will be deleted and will not appear. I check daily so don’t despair if your entry doesn’t appear immediately.

Due to a rash of automated spam messages we now use “captcha” authentication.  Just enter the “captcha” code and then SUBMIT. Don’t worry about upper or lower case….either will work. If you have trouble reading it just click the little button to the right and it will “refresh”. Thanks!

Many shipmates have told me, via email, about having visited this site. Oddly many have not left entries here for their shipmates to see. THEY do wonder how you are and probably would love to hear from you. This is a great way get back in contact.

REMEMBER….THE ONLY  WAY FOR YOUR SHIPMATES TO GET IN CONTACT WITH YOU IS HAVING YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS IN YOUR MESSAGE

For YOUR protection – No home phone numbers or addresses please. Please save that for when you make email contact.

REMEMBER….IF YOU WANT TO BE CONTACTED MAKE SURE YOU PUT YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS IN THE BODY OF YOUR MESSAGE

  1. I think I made a mistake on my former entry. My Father John R Burns was yeoman 3rd class with VF-14 tophatters. I am trying to find information or memorabilia for his 70 th birthday.

  2. Hello my father served on the U.S.S FRANKLIN D. Roosevelt CVB-42. from 1946-52. He joined the Navy in 1942. He all ways talk to me about his time in the navy on board this ship, he love the rose as he would call it. he pass a way in Dec 25 2005. He love the Navy he was a Gunners Mate and was a black salior from Dallas county, Alabama. I injoy this site it is very good to see some one do this, and my father name is John C Brown. I my self have retired form the US ARMY, but I go every year to Norflok Va to see my mother who live there, and I take my son’s to the ship yard to see all the new and old ship. GOOD JOB.

  3. To the crew members of the FDR I send my thanks. I was one of the Cub Scouts that had the honor to tour the FDR when it was stationed at Mayport in the early 1960’s. The tour was supposed to have been aboard the Sara she was late arriving. The hospitality given a group of “snot” nosed boys by the entire crew has remained one of my most treasured memories of my early Scouting years. I now have a son about the age I was during the tour, yes he is a Scout and I hope in the future he will be as blessed as we were to meet the members of our Brave Armed Forces.

  4. My brother, James Allen Curnett aka Jaque, was a fireman on the Roosevelt in 1965. I wondered if anyone remembers him. He was from Detroit & has since passed away due to lung problems. He loved the ship & he loved the adventure as I did. I was in the usmc & the usn In the late 50’s & early 60’s. Thank you…

Thanks for setting this up. What a great idea.

Those may have been the best years of my life. Free food, free medical, free dental, a place to sleep every night and yes even free beer money. It ain’t been that good ever since.

  6. My Father was on the FDR in 64. His name is John R Burns. His 70 th birthday is coming up and I would like to find some memorabilia from his time on the ship. I am looking for any photos of him. If you remember my father send me an email. mexdgo@yahoo.com

    Thanks

I was abord as a member of VF-14 during the WestPac cruise. Lots of fascinating memories!
There was the crossing of the Equator en route to Rio on 7/4/66, making us Star Spangled Shellbacks. I don’t think any of us could forget Yokosuka or Olongapo and the ship was crammed chock-a-block with personal electronics everyone was keen on buying. The day a plane came back with its tail chewed up by AA fire we knew we were in a war no BS! Sobering. October 26th was the day of the Oriskany’s big fire and the chaplain led us in prayer on the 1MC for those who were lost..and we had our own tragic fire as well. I didn’t make it to Hong Kong as I had a burst appendix and was in the Navy hospital at Cubi Point. While waiting for the ship to return I divided by time between the station library and the Tri-V Club in Olongapo. Had quite a bit of back pay to pick up when I got back aboard… then there was the port stop in Cape Town and we missed out on liberty because of the ****s in Washington who felt it would be seen as approval of apartheid. Coming round the Cape in a storm, a few of us saw the Flying Dutchman! Finally back to Mayport and after all the hard work, tragedies and triumphs, adventures and boredom, we were back in the States at last.

  9. My father William Prystauk served on the Roosevelt during I believe 1948 through 1951 as a fireman/damage controlman. He always spoke fondly of his time in service. I was glad to find this site and appreciate the work that goes into maintaining it.
